That question is probably asked more than any other question about using a wireless network. We all know why you would want to use a wireless network with a laptop computer or portable device. The name says it all, it is portable. But why a desktop computer? Why put it into a computer that supposedly is not going to be moved?
How many times have you wished you could change the layout of your computer workstation and maybe move it to a different location in your home or office?
When you use a wireless desktop, you are no longer tied to a specific place for your equipment. You can move it anywhere and be able to use the network.
Also, if you are just beginning to install a network, you will find that getting someone to install the wired cables can be more expensive than the network cards in the computers.
Network Card Types
There are basically two different wireless desktop network card types you can use with your equipment.
First, there is the internal PCI network card. You will have to open your computer to install this card. An external antenna will protrude from the back of the computer. This card will probably not be moved to any other equipment.
Second, you could get a USB network card that would be inserted into the USB port on your desktop. This would not require you to open the computer to put this in. Two advantages to using this as your network card is the ease of installing it and the fact that you can move it to another piece of equipment easily. It would also fit on a laptop computer. The disadvantage is that these cards cost a little more than the PCI card.
